On May 24th, 2021, on her way to her parents, Emily miraculously survived a near-fatal car accident.
In her own word, this is what happened:
It was supposed to be a beautiful day…
I was on my way to visit my family for the first time since the start of the pandemic.
I was cruising on the highway… when a reckless driver merged into my lane right in front of my car.
I tried to avoid it but my tire blew out as I was hitting the break.
“Everything happened so fast…. I was so scared!”
Unable to control my car, I hit a concrete barrier that I couldn’t avoid.
The collision crushed my left ankle and broke both bones below my knee. By the time the ambulance arrived, I had passed out for several minutes…
When I woke up in the ambulance the pain was unbearable. On the way to the hospital, I kept passing in and out of consciousness…
“I’ve never felt so much pain in my life…”
When I arrived at the hospital the doctor told me that my chances to save my leg were very low, but I was ready to do whatever it takes to save it.
Over the following weeks, I endured 5 painful surgeries but things continued to get worse.
As the suffering was too intense, I couldn’t endure it anymore.
Despite the opposition of my family, I gave up and decided to let the doctor amputate my left leg.
Today, I’m okay. I’m just trying to forget the pain and live a normal life.
I just wish I could’ve avoided the crash…
Why thousands of people are at risk of a deadly crash as I was…
The Police inspection of my car after the accident revealed my tires were underinflated and worn out.
I’ve never noticed that. I would just rely on regular car maintenance. I always thought my tires were fine.
As I tried to avoid the other car, I hit the brakes hard which caused the tires to skid and blow out.
So my dreadful accident could have been prevented by a simple tire pressure check.
I never thought something as simple as a routine check could have had such a big impact on my life!
But the case of Emily is not the only one…
Every year, nearly 11,000 tire-related crashes occur in the US alone.
Most of these wrecks result from either tire underinflation or worn-down tread. It is also estimated that 200 people die annually from weak-tire accidents.
A recent study reveals over 50% of cars in the US have underinflated tires.
Most drivers don’t realize this but driving with low-pressure tires increases the risk of a crash by 300%.
Although tire manufacturers recommend checking air pressure once a month, most people never bother unless their tires appear “low.”
But here is the problem…
Your tires can lose as much as 20% of air pressure and still appear to be fully inflated.
That’s right, you don’t know your tires are underinflated until you check them.
Under normal use, your tires lose atleast 1 PSI per month, so if you haven’t checked them in a while, there is a high risk they are underinflated without you knowing it!
When your tire pressure is low, the surface area in contact with the road increases resulting in more friction.
In the long run, your tires overheat, which leads to premature wear, tread separation, and blowouts.
Here are the main consequence of driving with low tire pressure:
❌ Loss of road tire friction especially in turns
❌ Increased braking distance
❌ High risk of aquaplaning on wet roads and loss of control
❌ Accelerated tread wear and risk of a tire blowout
❌ Decreased gas mileage and hundreds of dollars wasted at the pump
That’s why a routine tire checkup is critical when it comes to maintaining tire quality, integrity and avoiding accidents.
To decrease your risk for a tire-related crash, experts suggest checking each tire once per month.
But if your local climate often experiences extreme variations in temperature over a short amount of time, check your tire pressure more often.
Why most people don’t check their tire pressure…
While a lot of accidents could be prevented with a routine pressure check, most people admit never checking it…
And they are not to be blamed… finding a functional air pump is no easy task and often leads to frustration.
Yes, you can go to the tire shop or the car dealer… but they are often busy and make you wait hours before being able to help you.
Also for most people, they are not located nearby…
Are you ready to drive far away and wait hours every month for a pressure check?
Probably not…
The other option is to check your tire pressure by yourself at the gas station…
But the biggest issue when using the air pump at the gas station is to find one that actually works!
While most gas stations are not convenient, dirty and unsafe at night, the worst part is that their air pumps are often out of order or even worse not calibrated.
It’s even more dangerous to inflate your tires with a non calibrated machine as you don’t know at which pressure you’re filling them!
Why even the latest car technology won’t solve this problem
A lot of people rely on their vehicle TPMS (tire-pressure monitoring system) that is required by Federal law in all vehicles since 2007.
While it’s true that it monitors your tire pressure most TPMS warnings aren’t issued until a tire’s air pressure is 25% below the automaker’s recommendation.
At that level, your tires have already started to wear and have an impact on your tire performance…
Airmoto…the safe and easy way to check your tire pressure …
The last option is to check your tire pressure at home.
Yes, your own home!
While it used to require complex and bulky equipment, it is not the case anymore!
